Amerikamura, universally shortened to Amemura, is the centre of youth and street culture in Osaka, a dense grid of lanes just west of the Shinsaibashi shopping arcade. It grew from the 1970s as a place selling imported American clothing and records, and today it is packed with vintage and streetwear boutiques, sneaker shops, record stores, tattoo studios, cafes and cheap eats, its walls covered in murals and graffiti. Its heart is Sankaku (Triangle) Park, a paved plaza where young people gather, and a small replica Statue of Liberty perched on a building is its quirky landmark.
