The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the largest and most acclaimed aquariums in the world, built around a single breathtaking idea: a colossal central tank representing the Pacific Ocean, nine metres deep, home to whale sharks — the largest fish on Earth — gliding past as you spiral down around it. Rather than a series of separate rooms, Kaiyukan takes you on a journey through the habitats of the Pacific Rim, from rainforest to Antarctic to the open sea. It’s Osaka’s best rainy-day and family attraction, on the waterfront at Tempozan.

The Concept: A Journey Around the Pacific

Kaiyukan’s genius is its spiral, top-to-bottom route. You ride to the 8th floor and walk gently downward in a long spiral, passing the same giant central tank again and again from different depths, while themed habitat tanks line the way:

  • Japan Forest, the Aleutian Islands, the Antarctic, the Gulf of Panama, the Ecuador rainforest, and more — each a window into a Pacific Rim ecosystem.
  • The route reveals the deep central tank’s inhabitants at every level, so the whale sharks and rays stay with you the whole way down.
