West of the city centre, Osaka Bay opens the metropolis to the sea — a breezy waterfront of attractions, harbour views, and big-sky sunsets that makes a refreshing change from the neon canyons of Minami. Here you’ll find the giant Tempozan Ferris wheel, the superb Kaiyukan aquarium, sightseeing cruises, and, across the water on Sakurajima, Universal Studios Japan. It’s family territory and a great spot to watch the sun sink over the harbour.

Tempozan Harbor Village

The hub of the bay is Tempozan, by Osakako Station:

  • Tempozan Ferris Wheel: One of the world’s largest at 112.5 metres, with see-through gondolas and colour-changing night lights that double as a weather forecast. The 15-minute ride gives sweeping views over the bay, the city, and out toward Akashi Bridge on clear days.
  • Tempozan Marketplace: A mall with a retro Showa-era food court (“Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho”).
  • Sunset: The west-facing harbour is one of Osaka’s best sunset viewpoints.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Right beside the Ferris wheel, the Kaiyukan is one of Japan’s largest and best aquariums, built around a colossal central tank representing the Pacific Ring of Fire — home to whale sharks, manta rays, and a spiral walk-down route through ocean habitats. Sakurajima & Universal Studios Japan

Across the bay on the man-made island of Sakurajima sits Universal Studios Japan (USJ) — Super Nintendo World, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and more. On the Water

  • Santa Maria sightseeing cruise: A replica of Columbus’s ship cruises the bay from Tempozan — day trips and twilight cruises.
  • Captain Line ferry: A short boat hop links Tempozan to the USJ side across the harbour.
  • Sunset & night: The lit Ferris wheel and harbour are lovely after dark.
