Cherry blossom (sakura) season transforms the castle moats, riverbanks, and parks into clouds of blossom, and the city throws itself into hanami — flower-viewing picnics under the trees, by day and (lit up) by night. From the iconic combination of blossoms and Osaka Castle to the riverside tunnels of the Kema Sakuranomiya and the once-a-year Japan Mint passage, Osaka has some of the Kansai region’s best and liveliest cherry-blossom spots.

When Do They Peak?

Osaka’s cherry blossoms usually reach full bloom (mankai) in late March to early April, opening a few days earlier than Kyoto in a warm year. The window is short — perhaps a week of peak, ending with a snowfall of petals (hanafubuki). Because timing shifts yearly with the weather, check a current sakura forecast as your trip approaches. Plum blossoms (Feb–early Mar) and later varieties extend the broader spring-flower season.

The Best Hanami Spots

Osaka Castle Park

The iconic Osaka pairing — 3,000 cherry trees around the moats and walls, with the keep rising behind. The Nishinomaru Garden offers the postcard view and evening light-ups. One of the city’s great hanami parks (and one of its busiest). See our Osaka Castle guide .

Kema Sakuranomiya Park

A long riverside cherry-blossom tunnel along the Okawa River — kilometres of trees with room to picnic, far less hemmed-in than the castle, and beautiful from a river cruise. A local favourite.

The Japan Mint Passage (Sakura no Toorinuke)

For about one week only each April, the Osaka Mint opens its grounds for the famous “Toorinuke” — a one-way walk through an avenue of rare, late-blooming, often double-petalled cherry varieties found nowhere else in such concentration. A unique, ticketed, time-limited Osaka tradition.

Night Blossoms (Yozakura)

Several spots illuminate the cherry trees after dark — the Osaka Castle Park / Nishinomaru Garden and the Mint passage are the famous yozakura experiences, the blossoms glowing against the night and the castle. Magical, and busy — go on a weeknight if you can.

Hanami Tips

  • Picnics: The big parks (Castle Park, Kema Sakuranomiya, Expo Park) welcome blue-sheet hanami picnics — claim a spot early on peak weekends.
  • Go early or on weekdays for the popular spots; weekends at peak bloom are extremely crowded.
  • Food: Stalls appear in the big parks; or grab konbini/depachika supplies for your picnic.
  • Weather: Bring a layer — spring evenings are cool, especially for yozakura.
