Den Den Town, in the Nipponbashi district south of Namba, is Osaka’s centre for electronics, anime and otaku culture — the city’s counterpart to Tokyo’s Akihabara. Once a strip of radio and electrical-parts shops, it has evolved into blocks packed with anime and manga stores, retro and current video games, figures, trading cards, hobby and model shops, alongside maid cafes and specialist retailers of every niche. It is less polished and less crowded than Akihabara but rewarding for collectors, and each spring the streets host the Nipponbashi Street Festa, one of Japan’s largest cosplay events.

Tips
Collectors should come with a plan, as the specialist stores are the draw and reward digging rather than a quick look — prices for used figures and cards can be much better than in Tokyo. It’s quieter than Akihabara, which many prefer; time a visit for the Street Festa in spring if cosplay interests you, but expect huge crowds that day and check the date in advance.
