The HEP Five Ferris wheel is one of Umeda’s most recognisable sights: a vivid red wheel that appears to grow straight out of the roof of the HEP Five shopping mall in the busy Umeda district. Riders board from the seventh floor and rise to 106 metres above street level, the enclosed gondolas giving a close, unusual view directly over the shops, stations and towers of northern Osaka rather than a distant panorama. The mall below is aimed at younger shoppers, and the whole thing makes an easy, cheap novelty in the middle of the city’s busiest transport hub.

Tips
Ride after dark, when the Umeda lights make the short spin worthwhile — by day the enclosed view over rooftops is less impressive. It’s cheap, quick and rarely has a long wait, making it an easy add-on to Umeda shopping rather than a destination in itself; for a higher, wider panorama, pair or compare it with the nearby Umeda Sky Building.
