Hozenji Yokocho is a pair of narrow, stone-paved lanes tucked just south of the roar of Dotonbori, and stepping into them is like stepping back a century. Lined with tiny, atmospheric restaurants and bars behind lantern-lit facades, the alleys lead to Hozenji Temple, whose small Fudo Myo-o statue is famous for being completely covered in soft green moss — the result of generations of worshippers ladling water over it as they pray for success in love and business. It is one of the most evocative corners of old Osaka, and utterly at odds with the modern city a minute’s walk away.

Tips
Come in the evening, when the lanterns are lit and the tiny restaurants are open — it is transformed after dark and makes a wonderful contrast with Dotonbori a minute away. Ladle water over the mossy Fudo statue as worshippers do, keep your voice down as this is a working temple lane and a place people live and work, and note the restaurants here tend to be intimate and pricier than the Dotonbori chains.
