Kema Sakuranomiya Park stretches for several kilometres along both banks of the Okawa river north of central Osaka, and in early April it becomes one of the city’s most spectacular places to see cherry blossom. Nearly five thousand trees form near-continuous tunnels of pink along the water, best appreciated on a slow walk from Sakuranomiya Station toward the old Mint Bureau, whose private cherry avenue opens to the public for a famous week each spring. Boat cruises pass beneath the blossom from the water, and the wide riverside lawns fill with hanami picnics.

Tips
This is overwhelmingly a spring destination — outside cherry season it’s a pleasant but unremarkable riverside park, so time your visit for early April if the blossom is what you’re after. The Mint Bureau’s special cherry opening is a highlight but now requires advance reservation and draws big crowds; the free public riverbanks are spectacular in their own right and far less regimented.
