Just half an hour from central Osaka, Minoo Park (Mino-o) is the city’s favourite nature escape — a forested river valley climbing gently to the lovely 33-metre Minoo Waterfall. The paved riverside trail is easy enough for almost anyone, lined with old tea houses and shops, and in November the maples turn the whole gorge brilliant red and gold. It’s also famous for a uniquely Osaka snack: momiji tempura, real maple leaves battered and deep-fried into a sweet, crispy treat.

This guide covers the trail, the seasons, the wild monkeys, and the maple-leaf snack.

The Trail to the Waterfall

From Mino-o Station (Hankyu line), the walk to the falls is one easy, mostly paved path following the Minoo River upstream through the forest:

  • About 2.8 km one way, a gentle ~45–60-minute uphill stroll (more with stops).
  • Lined with tea houses, souvenir shops, and the Minoo insect museum in the lower stretch.
  • The valley narrows into pretty river scenery, small temples, and a quiet old onsen town feel.
  • The path ends at the Minoo Waterfall (Minoo-no-taki), a graceful 33-metre cascade — the reward, and a great picnic spot.

It’s stroller- and family-friendly for most of its length; wear comfortable shoes.

Autumn Leaves: Minoo’s Star Season

Minoo is one of the Osaka area’s premier autumn-foliage (momiji) destinations. In mid-to-late November, the maples lining the gorge blaze red and orange, and the falls framed by colour are spectacular. It’s busy on peak autumn weekends — go early or on a weekday. Spring (fresh green) and summer (cool, shaded river) are lovely and far quieter.

Wild Monkeys & Nature

The valley is home to wild Japanese macaques — you may spot them in the trees. Don’t feed them or show food (feeding is discouraged and they can snatch bags). The park is also rich in birdlife and insects, and the river is cool and refreshing in summer.

Momiji Tempura: The Maple-Leaf Snack

Minoo’s signature treat is momiji tempura — maple leaves (a specially cultivated, edible variety, salted and stored for months) dipped in a sweet sesame batter and deep-fried into crisp, golden, slightly sweet crackers. Sold warm from shops along the trail, they’re a fun, only-here snack to munch as you walk. Pair with a hot tea from a riverside tea house.
