Namba Parks is a shopping and office complex built above the old Nankai stadium site next to Namba Station, but it is far more interesting than that suggests. Designed by the American architect Jon Jerde to resemble a natural canyon, its floors step back as they rise, and across their setbacks climbs Parks Garden — a continuous rooftop park of some eight levels, planted with hundreds of species of trees, shrubs and flowers, with lawns, streams and quiet corners. It is free to walk, a genuinely green escape directly above one of Osaka’s busiest transport hubs, and looks its best in the early evening.

Tips
Head straight up to the rooftop garden, which is the real reason to come and which many shoppers below never realise is there — it’s free and open late. Come in the early evening when the planting, the city lights and the architecture come together best, and combine it easily with a Namba shopping and eating circuit, as it sits directly above the station.
