Shinsaibashi-suji: The Great Arcade

The spine of the district is the Shinsaibashi-suji shopping arcade โ€” a long, covered pedestrian street running ~600 metres from Shinsaibashi down toward Dotonbori, packed with everything from fast fashion and drugstores to flagship stores. At its northern end, the Shinsaibashi PARCO and the historic Daimaru department store anchor the high end; Midosuji boulevard alongside is lined with luxury flagships (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc.).

Amerikamura (“Ame-mura”)

Just west of Shinsaibashi, Amerikamura is Osaka’s youth-culture and vintage-fashion district โ€” streetwear, thrift and second-hand shops, record stores, graffiti, cheap eats, and a buzzing weekend crowd around Triangle Park. It’s Osaka’s answer to Tokyo’s Harajuku, grittier and more local.

Namba & Dotonbori

South of the arcade you spill into Dotonbori โ€” the neon canal of giant signs, the Glico man, and street food (see our Dotonbori guide ). Around Namba Station sit more malls (Namba Parks, with its rooftop garden; Namba City), the Takashimaya department store, and the Sennichimae and Hozenji lanes. Den Den Town (Nipponbashi), Osaka’s electronics-and-anime district, is just southeast โ€” Osaka’s Akihabara.

Getting There
