Tsuruhashi is the heart of Osaka’s Korean community and one of the most sensory food districts in Japan. The moment you leave the station you are in a dense warren of covered lanes packed with yakiniku grills, kimchi vendors, Korean grocers and stalls of tteok and jeon, the air permanently thick with charcoal smoke. The area grew from a postwar black market around a large Zainichi Korean population, and it remains the best place in western Japan to eat grilled meat: hundreds of restaurants, from cramped smoky counters to polished specialists, packed into a few blocks.

Tips

Come hungry and in the evening, when the yakiniku restaurants are at their liveliest and the smoke and neon are at full strength. Many of the best places are tiny and cash-preferred, some with no English, so be ready to point and share; the market lanes are worth exploring before or after a meal for kimchi and snacks to take away.
