Utsubo Park is a slim, tree-lined green space threaded through the office towers of western Osaka, a favourite lunchtime escape for the district’s workers and a genuinely lovely city park. Its centrepiece is a rose garden of many hundreds of bushes, laid out formally around fountains, which comes into full bloom twice a year in a wash of colour and fragrance. The rest of the park mixes lawns, a tennis centre and broad tree-lined promenades, and it makes an easy, calm stop between the shops of nearby Shinsaibashi and the harbour.

Tips
There’s little reason to make a special trip except in the rose seasons of May and October, when the garden is genuinely spectacular — the rest of the year it’s a pleasant but ordinary city park. If you’re staying or shopping in the Shinsaibashi and Hommachi area, it’s a free, quiet green break worth a short detour at any time, and it’s especially calm on weekday mornings.
