The Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival is one of the biggest and best-loved summer events in Osaka, staged on a single night in high summer over the broad Yodogawa river in the north of the city. Run largely on public donations, it sends tens of thousands of shells into the sky in a tightly choreographed programme, the wide river giving space for huge low bursts reflected in the water and a finale that fills the whole sky. Hundreds of thousands of spectators, many in summer yukata, line both banks, and food stalls turn the riverside into a festival in its own right.

Tips
Arrive hours early to claim a spot on the free banks, or buy a paid reserved seat if you want a guaranteed view without the scramble, as this draws enormous crowds.
