The Saga International Balloon Fiesta, held each autumn (late October–early November) on the banks of the Kase River just outside Saga city, is one of Asia’s largest hot-air ballooning events and the prefecture’s signature festival. Over several days, around a hundred balloons from Japan and around the world take part in competitions and spectacular mass ascensions, when scores of brightly coloured balloons rise together into the crisp morning sky — an unforgettable sight that draws huge crowds. Highlights include the early-morning launches, whimsical special-shaped balloons, and the evening ‘La Montgolfier Nocturne’, when tethered balloons glow in unison against the dark to music. Food stalls, a special festival train station and a lively atmosphere complete the event. Admission is free, making this Saga’s most spectacular seasonal spectacle.
