Karatsu Castle stands on a low hill above the sea where the Matsuura River flows into Karatsu Bay, its white walls and tiled roofs looking especially graceful against the water — earning it the nickname ‘Maizuru-jo’ (dancing crane castle) and, for the way it seems to float above the coast, the ‘floating castle’. Though the present keep is a modern reconstruction, its hilltop setting is superb: from the top there are sweeping views over the bay, the town, and the famous Niji-no-Matsubara, a two-hundred-year-old pine grove stretching several kilometres along the shore. Surrounded by cherry and wisteria in spring, and reached by a short climb or a lift, Karatsu Castle is a scenic and rewarding stop on Saga’s northern coast.
