In the town of Kashima on Saga’s Ariake coast stands Yutoku Inari, one of the three great Inari shrines of Japan, dedicated to the deity of prosperity, business and good harvests. Its most striking feature is the main hall, a vast, richly decorated vermilion structure built dramatically on tall stilts against a steep wooded hillside — a stage-like building reminiscent of Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera, rising in brilliant red among the greenery. From its elevated verandas there are lovely views over the town and the surrounding plain. Behind and above wind pathways and a tunnel of red torii gates climbing the hill to smaller shrines and viewpoints, and the grounds are beautiful with azaleas in spring and maples in autumn. Colourful, atmospheric and photogenic, Yutoku Inari is the spiritual highlight of southern Saga.
