Nanatsugama, meaning ‘seven cauldrons’, is a striking natural formation on the rugged Genkai Sea coast near Yobuko and Karatsu in northern Saga. Here the relentless waves of the Genkai Sea have carved a series of seven deep sea caves into a wall of towering basalt cliffs, their vertical columns of volcanic rock and cavern mouths creating a dramatic, elemental seascape. From the clifftop above there is a lookout with sweeping coastal views and a small shrine, while in calm weather sightseeing boats sail right up to and even into the largest caves, letting you feel their scale from the water. A designated national natural monument, Nanatsugama is one of the most spectacular stretches of Saga’s northern coast, best combined with the squid town of Yobuko nearby.
