The Chichibu Night Festival, held each December, is ranked among Japan’s three great float festivals and designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Six enormous, elaborately decorated floats — some weighing several tonnes and adorned with intricate wood carvings, lanterns and tapestries — are hauled through the streets by teams of local residents, accompanied by traditional flute and drum music, while a spectacular fireworks display lights the winter sky above.

Getting There

Tips
December nights in Chichibu are bitterly cold — dress in warm layers for the outdoor evening event. Arrive early for a good viewing spot, as this is one of the region’s most popular winter events and draws large crowds.
