The Lake Biwa Great Fireworks Festival, held on an evening in early August off Otsu, is one of the Kansai region’s biggest summer displays: some 10,000 shells burst over the open lake, their colours mirrored in the broad dark water and reflected off the lakeside towers of Otsu, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators to the shore. Because the launches are over water with no obstructions, the shells hang huge and clear above the lake, and the setting — Japan’s largest lake, an easy ten minutes from Kyoto — makes it one of the most accessible major hanabi for visitors based in the old capital.

Tips
This is one of Kansai’s most crowded nights — hundreds of thousands attend, station queues after the finale are enormous, and free shoreline spots fill hours ahead, so arrive early with a mat or buy a paid seat. Because Otsu is minutes from Kyoto, many combine it with a Kyoto base; if so, leave before the very last shell or plan to wait out the station crush over festival food.
