Biwako Valley, on the Hira mountains above Otsu, is Shiga’s easiest mountain thrill: a ropeway climbs some 1,100 metres in about five minutes to a summit plateau with one of the finest panoramas in the Kansai region — the whole silver expanse of Lake Biwa spread out below. In the green season the draw is the cliff-edge ‘Biwako Terrace’, a café-lounge with infinity-style decks that seem to float over the lake, plus ziplines and treetop adventure courses; in winter the same slopes become a ski and snowboard resort within an hour of Kyoto, making it a rare day-trip peak for city-based visitors.

Tips
On peak green-season weekends the ropeway and Biwako Terrace sell timed tickets that sell out — book online before travelling. Go on a clear day, as the whole point is the panorama; morning light is best over the lake, and dress warmer than the lakeshore even in summer, since the summit runs noticeably cooler than Otsu below.
