The Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi is unique: it is a museum whose most celebrated exhibit is its garden. Founded in 1970 by a local businessman, it pairs a serious collection of modern Japanese painting — above all works by Yokoyama Taikan — with vast, meticulously groomed gardens of raked gravel, moss, clipped pines and a distant borrowed mountain. The genius is in the framing: windows and openings turn the gardens into ‘living paintings’ that change with the light and seasons, and the whole is maintained to such perfection that it has been ranked the best garden in Japan for two decades running. The gardens are for viewing only, not walking.
