The Nikko Cedar Avenue (Suginamiki) is a Guinness World Record holder as the world’s longest tree-lined avenue, comprising roughly 12,000 towering Japanese cedars planted over a period of about 20 years starting in the early 1600s by a feudal retainer as an offering to the newly enshrined Tokugawa Ieyasu. The avenue stretches across three routes totalling roughly 37 km, with the most accessible and atmospheric sections near central Nikko offering a hushed, cathedral-like walk beneath centuries-old trees.
