Senjogahara (‘battlefield plain’), named for a legend of a mythical battle between the deities of Mount Nantai and Mount Akagi, is a high-altitude marshland in the Okunikko highlands above Lake Chuzenji, sitting at roughly 1,400 m elevation. Wooden boardwalks wind through the wetland, protecting the fragile ecosystem while offering relatively easy hiking with views toward the surrounding mountains, wildflower meadows blooming through summer, and golden-brown grasses in autumn creating an atmospheric, open contrast to Nikko’s densely forested shrine areas.

Getting There

Tips
The marsh sits at high elevation and can be noticeably cooler than central Nikko, especially in early morning — bring a light jacket even in summer. Snow closes much of the area in winter, so plan a visit between late spring and autumn.
