Tochigi has been Japan’s leading strawberry-producing prefecture for decades, its greenhouse cultivation techniques and mild winter climate ideal for growing premium varieties like Tochiotome and the newer, exceptionally sweet Tochiaika. Unlike the summer strawberry season found elsewhere in the world, Japanese strawberries peak in winter and early spring, and dozens of farms across Tochigi open to visitors from roughly November through May for all-you-can-eat picking sessions in heated greenhouses.
