Tokushima city grew up around Tokushima Castle, built in the late sixteenth century by the ruling Hachisuka clan at the foot of Mount Bizan. Though the castle buildings are gone, the site is now a pleasant park preserving impressive stone walls and moats, along with the beautiful Senshukaku Japanese landscape garden, a nationally designated scenic spot. Rising directly behind it is Mount Bizan, the symbol of the city, whose summit is reached by a ropeway or a road and rewards you with a sweeping panorama over Tokushima, the Yoshino River delta and the Seto Inland Sea — especially fine at night. Central and easily combined with the city’s Awa Odori attractions, the castle park and Bizan together make the historic and scenic heart of Tokushima.
