Ameyoko (short for Ameya-Yokocho) is a vibrant, chaotic open-air market that stretches for around 400 metres along and beneath the elevated train tracks between Ueno and Okachimachi stations. Born as a black market in the post-war years, it has kept a raw, energetic, old-Tokyo bazaar atmosphere quite unlike the city’s polished shopping districts. Around 400 stalls and shops are crammed together, vendors calling out their wares, selling everything from fresh seafood, dried goods and exotic snacks to sweets, spices, tea, clothing, cosmetics, sneakers and discount goods, often at bargain prices with room to haggle. It’s especially lively and atmospheric, and a great place to eat cheap street food — grilled seafood, kebabs, takoyaki and more — as you browse. Loud, crowded and full of energy, Ameyoko offers a fun, gritty contrast to Tokyo’s modern side and a taste of its older market culture.
