Built on reclaimed land in the middle of Tokyo Bay, Odaiba is the city’s vision of the future at play. A monorail glides driverless across the water to an island of vast shopping malls, a life-size Gundam robot, digital art museums, science centres, a sandy beach, and sweeping views of the Rainbow Bridge and the skyline. By day it’s a family-friendly playground; by night the bay lights up and the bridge glows. Odaiba is where Tokyo goes to have fun on a grand, slightly surreal scale.
This guide covers the highlights โ from the towering Gundam to teamLab, from bayside walks to the best way to arrive โ and how to plan a full day on the island.

Getting There: The Journey Is Part of It
The best way to reach Odaiba is the Yurikamome line โ a driverless, elevated monorail that loops out from Shimbashi, climbs over the Rainbow Bridge, and curves through the bay with panoramic views the whole way. Sit at the very front (no driver = front-row window) for the best ride. It’s an attraction in itself.
Alternatively, the Rinkai line connects via Osaki/Shibuya, and a water bus runs from Asakusa/Hinode for a scenic sea approach.
The Highlights
1. The Life-Size Gundam (Unicorn Gundam)
Standing guard outside the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza mall is a 19.7-metre-tall RX-0 Unicorn Gundam statue โ one of Tokyo’s most iconic photo spots. At scheduled times each day it performs a transformation, with its armour panels opening and lights and sound effects activating (especially impressive after dark). Free to view from the plaza. The mall behind houses the Gundam Base shop and a Gundam exhibition for fans.
2. teamLab (digital art)
Odaiba’s bay area is closely associated with teamLab’s immersive digital art. Note that the museums have moved/changed over time โ teamLab Planets is in nearby Toyosu (a stop or two away) and is the current must-see. See our dedicated teamLab guide for which museum to choose and how to book.
3. Rainbow Bridge & Bayside Views
The Rainbow Bridge, spanning the bay toward central Tokyo, is Odaiba’s signature backdrop โ white by day, illuminated in colour by night. Walk the seaside promenade for the classic view, with the bridge, the skyline, and (a famous quirk) a replica Statue of Liberty all in one frame. The Odaiba Seaside Park and its small beach make for a relaxed bayside stroll, especially at sunset.
4. Shopping & Malls
Odaiba is a mall-lover’s paradise:
- DiverCity Tokyo Plaza โ home of the Gundam, shops, and a big food court
- Aqua City and DECKS Tokyo Beach โ bayside malls with restaurants, an arcade, and retro-themed floors (DECKS has the nostalgic “Odaiba Takoyaki Museum” and a vintage Showa-era street)
- Palette Town area (note: parts have been redeveloped โ the famous big Ferris wheel was dismantled, so check what’s currently operating)
5. Museums & Family Attractions
- Miraikan (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation): A superb hands-on science museum with robots (including ASIMO demonstrations historically), space, and tech exhibits โ excellent for families and curious adults.
- Aqua City & DECKS arcades: Huge game centres, VR, and family entertainment.
- Oedo Onsen note: The famous Edo-themed hot-spring park closed at its Odaiba site โ see our hot spring guide for the current situation and alternatives.
Day vs. Night
- Daytime: Best for the malls, museums, Gundam, science centre, and family activities. The bay and beach are pleasant in good weather.
- Sunset & night: Odaiba transforms. The Rainbow Bridge lights up, the Gundam’s evening show is most dramatic after dark, the skyline glitters across the water, and the bayside promenade becomes a romantic evening walk. For couples especially, come for sunset and stay into the evening.
Best For
- Families: Miraikan, arcades, the beach, easy mall dining, the Gundam โ a low-stress full day with something for every age.
- Couples: Sunset over the bay, the illuminated Rainbow Bridge, teamLab nearby, relaxed bayside dining.
- Rainy days: Almost everything is indoors and connected by covered walkways โ a reliable bad-weather plan.
Practical Tips
- Check what’s currently open. Odaiba is constantly redeveloping โ some past attractions (the big Ferris wheel, the Odaiba Oedo Onsen, the original teamLab Borderless) have closed or moved. Verify current offerings before you go.
- A Yurikamome day pass can be worth it if you hop around the island and bayside.
- It’s spread out โ the island is large and attractions are a walk apart; wear comfortable shoes or use the monorail between zones.
- Combine with Toyosu (teamLab Planets, Toyosu Market) one stop away.
Getting There
- Yurikamome line from Shimbashi or Toyosu โ the scenic elevated monorail over the Rainbow Bridge (recommended).
- Rinkai line from Osaki/Shibuya/Shinjuku via Tokyo Teleport Station.
- Water bus from Asakusa or Hinode Pier for a sea approach.
