Tokyo Tower, standing 333 metres tall in the Shiba-koen district, is one of the city’s most beloved and enduring symbols. Painted in distinctive orange and white and inspired by the Eiffel Tower, it was completed in 1958 as a broadcasting tower and quickly became an icon of post-war Tokyo’s rebirth. Though now surpassed in height by the Skytree, Tokyo Tower retains a special nostalgic, retro charm. Two observation decks — the Main Deck at 150 m and the higher Top Deck at 250 m — offer sweeping panoramic views over the city, taking in landmarks, Tokyo Bay and, on clear days, Mount Fuji, and the views are especially romantic after dark when the city lights up. At its base, the ‘Foot Town’ complex holds shops, cafés and attractions. Beautifully illuminated itself each night, Tokyo Tower is a classic Tokyo experience, especially lovely at sunset and in the evening.

Tips
Go up at sunset or after dark for the most romantic views, when the city lights spread out below, and choose the higher Top Deck (by reservation) for the best panorama. Look for Mount Fuji on clear days, combine it with neighbouring Zojo-ji temple for a classic photo of the tower behind the temple gate, and see the tower’s own night illumination from the surrounding streets.
