Toyosu Market, on a reclaimed island in Tokyo Bay, is the huge modern wholesale market that took over from the legendary Tsukiji inner market in 2018, and is now one of the largest fish and seafood markets in the world. Housed in vast, clean, climate-controlled buildings, it handles an enormous volume of seafood and produce. For visitors, the star attraction is the chance to watch the famous pre-dawn tuna auctions — where huge frozen tuna are sold amid rapid bidding — viewed from dedicated observation windows and decks (a limited number can watch from a closer ground-level area by advance application). Elevated walkways and viewing areas let you observe the bustling market below, and there are exhibits explaining its workings. Best of all, the market’s restaurants serve exceptionally fresh sushi and seafood breakfasts, straight from the source. Modern and fascinating, Toyosu offers a behind-the-scenes look at Tokyo’s seafood heart — go very early for the auctions.

Tips
Go very early (around 5–6 am) to see the tuna auctions from the observation windows, and apply in advance if you want the limited closer-viewing spots. Eat the incredibly fresh sushi breakfast at one of the market restaurants (expect queues at the famous ones), note it closes on some Wednesdays and Sundays, and combine it with the Tsukiji outer market which still buzzes with food stalls.
