Ueno Zoo (Ueno Zoological Gardens), opened in 1882 within Ueno Park, is Japan’s oldest zoo and one of its most popular, especially beloved by families. Its most famous residents by far are the giant pandas, which draw huge crowds and have long been the zoo’s star attraction and a symbol of Ueno itself. Beyond the pandas, the zoo is home to a wide variety of animals across its East and West gardens — from elephants, tigers, gorillas and polar bears to a children’s petting area — connected by a short monorail (one of Japan’s first). Compact and easy to visit in the middle of Ueno Park’s museums and greenery, and with modest admission, it makes an easy, enjoyable stop especially for those travelling with children. Expect crowds and possible queues to see the pandas, particularly on weekends and holidays.
