Lake Nakaumi is a vast brackish lagoon straddling the border of Tottori and Shimane, spreading beside the city of Yonago in western Tottori. Neither quite sea nor lake, its shallow waters are a haven for waterbirds — swans and countless migratory species winter here, making it one of the region’s great birdwatching spots — and its wide, open horizon delivers some of the most celebrated sunsets in the San’in region. Around it lie waterside parks, an island linked by bridge, and views across to Mount Daisen rising beyond. For travellers, it is a serene, spacious counterpoint to Tottori’s dramatic dunes and mountains, best enjoyed slowly toward evening.
