Misasa Onsen, in the hills of central Tottori, is one of Japan’s most distinctive hot springs. Discovered some 800 years ago, its waters contain among the highest levels of natural radon of any spring in the world — a radioactive element that, in the tiny doses of a hot bath, is claimed under the theory of hormesis to stimulate the body and promote healing, drawing visitors seeking its reputed benefits. The small town lines a river in a wooded valley, with old wooden ryokan, a temple perched on a cliff above, free footbaths and a famous mixed open-air bath, Kawara-buro, right on the riverbank in the middle of town.

Tips
Stay overnight in one of the old ryokan to make the most of the waters and the valley setting, though several offer day-use bathing too. The riverside Kawara-buro is free but very exposed and mixed-gender, so it suits the confident rather than everyone; the free footbaths are an easier way to sample the water, and autumn brings fine colour to the valley.
