The Sand Museum, right beside the Tottori Sand Dunes, is the only museum in the world devoted to sculpture made from sand. Each year it invites top sand sculptors from around the globe to carve enormous, astonishingly detailed works — figures, buildings and scenes several metres tall — around a single theme, such as a different country or civilisation. The results, held together only by water and packing, are displayed for about a year before being returned to loose sand and rebuilt anew for the next theme. It turns the region’s defining material into monumental, temporary art, and the annual reveal draws crowds.

Tips
Check the exhibition dates before you go, as the museum closes for several weeks between themes while the old sculptures are dismantled and new ones carved — turning up in the gap means a locked door. It’s right beside the dunes, so combine the two easily, and note the theme changes yearly, making a repeat visit worthwhile.
