Adventure World, just outside Shirahama, is Wakayama’s biggest family attraction, combining a zoo, a safari park and a marine park on one large site. Its greatest fame comes from its giant pandas: the park has run one of the world’s most successful panda breeding programmes outside China, and is one of only a couple of places in Japan where visitors can see them. Beyond the pandas, a safari zone can be toured by bus, tram or on foot past lions, rhinos and giraffes, while the marine section stages dolphin and orca performances, making for a full and varied family day.

  • By bus: about 10 minutes by bus from JR Shirahama Station.

Tips

Check the panda situation before you travel, as the pandas at the park have changed over the years with returns to China — confirm current residents on the official site rather than assuming. Go on a weekday if you can, buy tickets online to save queuing, and pace the day: the site is large, so plan the safari, panda area and a marine show around the posted schedule.
