Nachikatsuura is Japan’s leading port for fresh, never-frozen tuna, landing more of it than anywhere else in the country thanks to a fleet that uses longlines rather than nets, bringing the fish in whole and undamaged. On most mornings the market floor fills with rows of gleaming tuna as buyers inspect and bid, and visitors can watch the whole auction free from a dedicated gallery above — a genuine working market rather than a show. Afterwards, the restaurants and inns around the harbour serve that same tuna for breakfast, at prices unthinkable in Tokyo.

Tips
Get to the viewing gallery by around 7am and check in advance which mornings the auction runs, as it doesn’t operate every day (typically not Saturdays and some holidays). Follow it with a tuna breakfast at one of the harbour restaurants — maguro-don here costs a fraction of what the same quality would in a big city, and the fish has never been frozen.
