The Mogami River gorge boat ride (Mogami-kyo funakudari) is one of Japan’s most celebrated river excursions — flat-bottomed boats navigate the dramatic gorge while boatmen sing traditional folk songs from the bow. In spring the gorge walls are draped with wild cherry blossoms; in autumn the maples turn the cliffs deep crimson above the dark water. The season runs April to November, with hot sake served aboard in the cooler months.
