Zao Onsen is Japan’s most complete ski-and-onsen resort — the slopes receive consistently heavy snowfall from November to April, while milky-white sulphurous hot springs at the base of the mountain have flowed since the 2nd century. In winter, supercooled mist coats every fir tree in successive layers of ice, building over weeks into the otherworldly ‘juhyo’ (snow monsters). After skiing, the open-air Zao Dai-Rotenburo communal bath is the perfect finish.

Getting There

  • By bus: direct buses from Yamagata Station in winter.
  • By car: mountain roads (winter tyres essential).

The juhyo season peaks late December to February — a night illumination tour is the most dramatic way to see them. The Dai-Rotenburo bath is mixed and open-air, so bring a small towel as swimwear isn’t used.
