The Yamaguchi Gion Chochin Matsuri is the city’s great summer festival, a tradition some six hundred years old in which central Yamaguchi is lit by tens of thousands of glowing red paper lanterns. Strung in dense curtains along the main streets, over shrines and on lantern-decked poles and floats, their warm red light transforms the city into a magical scene after dark. The festivities include a lantern-lit dance in which performers move among the swaying lights, processions and shrine rites, all held over a couple of evenings in early August. It is one of Yamaguchi city’s most atmospheric events and a beautiful, distinctly Japanese celebration of summer and light.
