Iwakuni Castle crowns the summit of Mount Yokoyama, high above the Nishiki River and the famous Kintaikyo Bridge in eastern Yamaguchi. Originally built in the early seventeenth century by the Kikkawa lords, it was dismantled soon after under the shogunate’s one-castle-per-domain rule and rebuilt in the twentieth century as the handsome white keep seen today. A cable car climbs the mountain in a few minutes, and from the top the reward is a sweeping panorama: the five arches of the Kintaikyo directly below, the town spreading along the river, and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea beyond. Together with the bridge below, it makes the classic Iwakuni outing.

Tips
Buy the combination ticket covering the bridge, cable car and castle, which is better value than separate tickets, and come on a clear day for the views over the river, town and inland sea. Take the cable car up rather than the steep trail unless you want the hike, allow time at the top for the panorama, and combine it with the Kintaikyo Bridge below for the full Iwakuni day.
