The garden known as Sesshu Teien, in the grounds of Joei-ji temple in Yamaguchi city, is traditionally attributed to Sesshu Toyo, the fifteenth-century painter-monk regarded as one of the greatest masters of Japanese ink painting. Laid out as a strolling and viewing garden behind the temple, it composes moss, carefully placed stones, clipped shrubs and a quiet pond into a serene landscape meant to be contemplated much like one of Sesshu’s paintings. It is at its most beautiful in the fresh green of early summer and the maple colour of autumn, and being off the main tourist track it is usually calm. For lovers of gardens and Zen aesthetics, it is one of Yamaguchi city’s quiet treasures.
