The Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival is one of the largest and most spectacular fireworks displays in western Japan, held each summer over the narrow strait between Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu in Kyushu. What makes it special is that both cities launch simultaneously from opposite shores, sending tens of thousands of shells bursting over the water in a friendly cross-strait rivalry, their light doubled by reflection on the sea and framed by the great Kanmon Bridge.
