Chureito Pagoda is a five-storey red pagoda set on a hillside above Fujiyoshida, reached by a climb of just under 400 steps, and frames one of Japan’s most iconic views: the vermilion pagoda in the foreground with Mount Fuji rising behind it across the town below. The scene is especially striking in spring when cherry blossoms surround the pagoda, and in autumn with coloured foliage, drawing photographers from around the world to what has become one of the most recognisable images of Japan.

Getting There
- By train: Fujikyu Railway to Shimoyoshida Station, roughly a 10-minute walk to the base of the steps.
- By car: parking available near the shrine at the base of the hillside.
Tips
Clear mornings, especially in the cooler months, offer the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji unobscured by cloud, which often builds up around the peak later in the day. The nearly 400 steps to the pagoda are steep, so allow time and wear comfortable footwear, and expect crowds and photo queues during cherry blossom season.
