Shimanto River Canoeing
The Shimanto River โ often called Japan's last pristine river โ flows 196 km through Kochi to the Pacific without a single large dam. The lower reaches are navigable by canoe and kayak, passing through ancient suibashi (submersible bridges built low to flow under, not stop, floodwater) and teagarden villages. Summer canoeing through this wilderness feels genuinely remote despite being just hours from Kochi city.
