Every August 9th at 11:02 a.m. โ the exact moment the second atomic bomb fell in 1945 โ Nagasaki holds its Peace Memorial Ceremony at the Nagasaki Peace Park. A minute's silence, bell ringing, and the mayor's Peace Declaration draw dignitaries from around the world in a solemn tribute and call for nuclear abolition.
During the two weeks of Lunar New Year, central Nagasaki transforms as 15,000 red and gold lanterns illuminate Chinatown, Nagasaki Park, and the harbour. Giant dragon, zodiac animal, and deity figures glow against the night sky, while Chinatown fills with steaming dumplings, lion dances, and traditional Chinese street performers.
Listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, Nagasaki Kunchi in October is one of Japan's most exotic festivals โ a reflection of the city's centuries of Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese influences. Dragon boat dances, Chinese-style parade floats with mechanical figures, and Dutch ship replicas take turns performing in Suwa Shrine's precincts.
Each August, Nagasaki's magnificent harbour hosts the Nagasaki Port Festival with spectacular fireworks reflecting off the enclosed bay, dragon boat racing, and a waterfront carnival. The natural amphitheatre of surrounding hills creates one of Japan's most visually dramatic fireworks settings, best viewed from the hillside observatory.
