Each spring and summer, the Tottori Sand Museum invites world-champion sand sculptors to create astonishing large-scale sculptures from Tottori sand. A different country's art and culture provides each year's theme, resulting in architectural masterpieces 15 m tall โ all made entirely without adhesives and eventually returned to sand.
Held in August at the mouth of the Sendai River, Tottori's summer fireworks festival combines 10,000 shells with live music and the city's signature Shanshan Matsuri umbrella dance. Squid-drying racks lit like lanterns line the waterfront, creating an atmospheric backdrop unique to this squid-fishing town.
