Best Prefectures by Season
Japan's most photographed season. The cherry blossom front (*sakura zensen*) sweeps from Kyushu in March to Hokkaido in early May, turning parks, canals, and castle moats pink and white. Spring festivals, mild temperatures (8β22Β°C), and outdoor markets make this the most popular season of the year β book early.

Japan's summer is a season of intense festivals, tropical beaches, and mountain escapes. Heat and humidity in the big cities (30β36Β°C in Tokyo and Osaka) push smart travellers toward Hokkaido, Nagano, or the Okinawa islands. Summer matsuri β Nebuta, Tanabata, Awa Odori β are Japan's largest public events.

Autumn is Japan's second great travel season. Maples (*momiji*) and ginkgos illuminate temples, gardens, and mountains in red, orange, and gold from mid-October through mid-December. Like the cherry blossom front, the colour front descends from northern Hokkaido β giving flexible travellers weeks to chase it.

Japan's winter is the least crowded and most affordable season β except for Hokkaido during ski season. December illuminations transform the cities; hot spring (*onsen*) bathing peaks when snow falls outside; and rural Japan β Shirakawa-go, Ginzan Onsen, Kyoto's countryside β is beautiful under snow. Okinawa stays mild (18β22Β°C) all winter.
