Best Prefectures by Season
Japan's most photographed season. The cherry blossom front (*sakura zensen*) sweeps from Kyushu in March to Hokkaido in early May, turning parks, canals, and castle moats pink and white. Spring festivals, mild temperatures (8โ22ยฐC), and outdoor markets make this the most popular season of the year โ book early.

Japan's summer is a season of intense festivals, tropical beaches, and mountain escapes. Heat and humidity in the big cities (30โ36ยฐC in Tokyo and Osaka) push smart travellers toward Hokkaido, Nagano, or the Okinawa islands. Summer matsuri โ Nebuta, Tanabata, Awa Odori โ are Japan's largest public events.

Autumn is Japan's second great travel season. Maples (*momiji*) and ginkgos illuminate temples, gardens, and mountains in red, orange, and gold from mid-October through mid-December. Like the cherry blossom front, the colour front descends from northern Hokkaido โ giving flexible travellers weeks to chase it.

Japan's winter is the least crowded and most affordable season โ except for Hokkaido during ski season. December illuminations transform the cities; hot spring (*onsen*) bathing peaks when snow falls outside; and rural Japan โ Shirakawa-go, Ginzan Onsen, Kyoto's countryside โ is beautiful under snow. Okinawa stays mild (18โ22ยฐC) all winter.
